ELEVATING WORK PLATFORM ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA (EWPA) Secondary Guarding on MEWPs – Industry Group Information Sheet.
Thank you to the EWPA for the important release of the Secondary Guarding for the prevention of operator crush in Manned Elevated Work Platforms. This important industry group initiative details the availability of secondary systems, the risk process for selection of these systems, and the types of systems available to the market.
Mine Tech Australia (MTA) a proud member of the EWPA is pleased to see the proximity type of system described as ” Proximity Systems – Sensors that may detect an object near (eg above and behind) the operator and then restrict MEWP movements Multiple sensors are typically used.”
The EWPA document focuses on the reduction of crush risks from contact and Mine Tech is very proud of the company’s SAFEGUARD EWP Proximity Control System. It is the only system in production with interlock crush protection from contact, crush protection from operators/passengers being caught between any basket edge, and an object and contact to electrical energy risks. The MTA SAFEGUARD solution is the only patented and working sensor system in the world. Manufactured in Perth, Australia the SAFEGUARD reports to supervisors of a detection incident or an emergency within the basket ensuring workers have an added level of safety oversight when working at elevations.

The SAFEGUARD is being engineered into the production line of global OEM’s and is also available for retrofit to rough terrain scissors, vertical mast lifts, spider lifts, trailer lifts, truck-mounted, and van-mounted boom lifts with proximity and electrical interlock.
The link to the EWPA information sheet is below and please note the MTA SAFEGUARD is available, proven, cost-effective, and prevents contact that may crush operators, bring material into the basket or cause external damage. The SAFEGUARD EWP is the only effective and complete secondary guarding option available to hire companies and employers to mitigate crush risk when using a MEWP.
